Includes original release liner notes by Charlie Haden. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Charlie Haden's first album, LIBERATION MUSIC ORCHESTRA, appeared when he was 32 years old. Desipte his youth, his musical experience was already deep and wide; he spent time in Ornette Coleman's groundbreaking quartet, then found a place in the ensembles of both Keith Jarrett and Alice Coltrane. For this album, his assembled orchestra includes an impressive list of the cream of the late-'60s jazz avant garde, including Carla Bley, Don Cherry, Gato Barbieri, Dewey Redman, Michael Mantler, Paul Motian, and Roswell Rudd. Bley, who played piano and wrote three of the pieces, would follow a similar musical path on her own subsequent releases. The set is informed in large part by Haden's interest in the Spanish Civil War and his ongoing social and political concerns. What makes this set so engaging is that he's captured the heart of the matter with honest musical passion
