This album Ella Fitzgerald recorded with Nelson Riddle are rightfully regarded as among the finest collaborative albums in jazz. Two of them would enable Ella to win the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, but the third was just as deserving. Swings Gently is an uplifting album, the thirteen songs being a delicate balance between Ellas vocal improvisational instincts with those of the musicians involved. Worthy of special mention is saxophonist Ronnie Lang, one of the leading session musicians of the day. Originally recorded in 1961 (at the same time as Swings Brightly), this album was produced at a time when both Ella and Nelson were at the top of their respective game. The overall recording is flawless; two masters producing one triumphant album.
