Seven original tunes orchestrated and beautifully performed by a three-piece horn front section, alto saxophonist Art Pepper, trumpeter Chet Baker and tenor saxophonist Phil Urso, accompanied by a top rhythm section of drummer Larance Marable, bassist Curtis Counce and Counce Quintet member pianist Carl Perkins.

"Playboys" is the third collaboration between Baker & Pepper, two of the most distinctive and expressive voices in jazz, who sound merely like extremely competent musicians here. Baker deals with an extroverted brass sound that is not very characteristic of him and Pepper handles chord progressions in a way that he usually only did in the Stan Kenton big band.

These really entertaining and mostly high-energy tracks are perfect for bop lovers as well as mainstream jazz listeners.
